Key Findings

The global radioactive waste management marketis expected to grow at moderate rate during the forecasted period.Radioactive waste is described as contaminated material by radioactivity or it is radioactive by itself. Radioactive waste management techniques varies according to the type of waste to be processed. The level of hazards of radioactive waste diminishes with time as the substance lose its radioactivity depending upon its half-life. The main aim in managing and disposing radioactive wastes is to protect the environment and the people from its harmful effects. It is usually achieved by isolating, treating or diluting the waste so that radionuclide emission doesn’t harm the environment. Global radioactive waste management market is expected to grow rapidly in nearfuture. The growth is attributed byrising demand of nuclear power plants to generate electricity and increased government regulatory and framework. The total power generated by nuclear power plants was around 2364 billion kWh in 2014. Electricity costs includes nuclear waste management costs too which is approximately 5% of the electricity generation cost. There are more than 430nuclear plants in the world generating approximately 15% of the world’s electricity. The trend of electricity generation from nuclear generation is leading to development of new power plants. Around 75 new nuclear power plants are under construction in 15 countries worldwide. In addition, increasing government concern regarding long term waste management solutions, increasing environmental and population prevention standards etc. are the few factors spurring the demand of nuclear waste management globally. However, few restraints and challenges such asrisks associated with transportation of waste, complicated regulatory structure, high cost of treatment, and no permanent solution for the nuclear waste management are hampering the market potential of global markets and technologies for global radioactive waste management.

Market Segment Insight

The global radioactive waste management market is segmented on the basis of type, technology and reactor type.On the basis of different types, the market is segmented aslow level waste, intermediate level waste and high level waste. In this segment low level waste dominates the market due to mass production in various countries. Around 90% of the world’s radioactive waste is the low level waste only.Low level waste is generated from industry, hospitals and nuclear fuel cycle. It usually comprises of clothing, paper, tools, filters etc. These type of waste don’t require shielding while transportation. Most of the low level waste arise from nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities and nuclear power stations. It comprises of 90% of radioactive waste by volume but only 1% of the radioactivity. Intermediate level radioactivity poses higher level of radioactivity and most of them requires shielding but doesn’t generate enough heat required for special disposal and storage facilities. It arises from nuclear plant decommissioning, reprocessing of spent fuel etc. It comprises of reactor components, graphite rods, sludges etc. Radioactive waste is enough radioactive for decay heat and are classified as high level radioactive. They require special disposal and storage facilities. On the basis of reactor type, market is segmented as pressurized water reactor, boiling water reactor, pressurized heavy water reactor, gas cooled reactor and others. Gas cooled reactor and boiling water reactor hold the majority of market share in this segment type. Technology segment comprises of transportation and disposal, treatment, storage and containment, stabilization/encapsulation and others. Disposal and storage is majorly used high level as well as low level radioactive wastes. Treatment is used for intermediate level and low level wastes.

Regional Insight

The major regional segments analyzed in the report includeNorth America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Rest of the World with further bifurcation of them on country level, which includes U.S, Canada, India, China, Japan, Germany, U.K., Spain, Brazil etc. The type of waste produced in various countries differs and so is the waste management processes. U.S. mainly produces high level waste and dumps around 3 metric cubic feet per year and stored high level waste in US is around 60000 tons. In APAC, Japan have the largest market of nuclear waste management followed by India and China.

Competitive Insights

Some of the key market players are Al Rasheed, American Waste Management Services Inc.,, Areva Inc., Atkin, Bartlett Nuclear Inc., Cabrera Services, Inc., Chesapeake Nuclear Services, Inc., Ecology Services, Inc., Econ Industries Gmbh, EDF, Holtec International, Kurion Inc., Mid Counties Waste Management Services Ltd., Nuclear Research & Consultancy Group (Nrg) (The), Pangea Resources, Radiation Decontamination Solutions Llc, Sa Radiation Pty Ltd, Swedish Nuclear Fuel And Waste Management Company, Veolia Environmental Services andWm Symposia.Market expansion, mergers &collaborations, research and developmentare the key strategies adopted by the market players to sustain in the market and expand their product portfolio. In April 2016, Energy Solutions' Projects, Products and Technology (PP&T) business was completely acquired by Atkins. It’s a $318 million acquisition which was announced in November 2015. The acquisition enhances the company’s presence in UK and APAC market. Similarly, In April 2016, EDF has agreed to acquire Studsvik’s low level radioactive waste operation in Sweden and UK. These two companies have also signed agreement on nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management which will help the companies to use each other expertise and grow in the sector.
