A central venous catheter also termed as central lines catheter or central venous access devices (CVADs), is long, thin hollow plastic tube that is inserted into large vein of the neck or chest to administer fluid, nutrients, medicine and blood product. The WHO reported that new cases of cancer, in 2012 were 14.1 million, which is further predicted to rise, and consequently increase the economic burden. Other chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease which incidence is on rise in geriatric population, all this would drive the venous catheter market. It is beneficial for patients with chronic diseases who require long term intravenous therapy. The growth of central venous catheters market is driven by rise in chronic disease prevalence, especially in geriatric population, dependence on parenteral nutrition. Patients with central venous catheters are prone to bloodstream infections, further increasing the treatment cost. As central venous catheter is associated with adverse events that are hazardous to patient, and expensive to treat, this may hamper the growth of the market.

Based on the type of product, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Tunneled Catheters
  • Non-tunneled Catheters

Between the two product types, non-tunneled catheters occupy larger revenue share. In tunneled catheter type one end is inserted surgically into a vein in the chest or the neck and passed under the skin and other end remains outside the skin. Through this opening end of the catheter, medicine and nutrition is administered. Tunneled catheters reduce the incidence of infection due to distance between the entry site and skin outlet. While non-tunnelled catheters are inserted by percutaneous venipuncture through subclavian vein or internal jugular vein. In non-tunnelled catheters, the risk of infection is more as compared to other central venous access devices as there is no sub-tunneling.

Based on the type of design, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Single Lumen
  • Double Lumen
  • Multi Lumen

Multi lumen catheters occupy the largest revenue share amongst all product types, due to advantage over the single lumen products. A single or multiple lumens is chosen depending on the clinical need of the patient. For patient who needs an infusion into large, central vein single-lumen catheter is used. It consist of tube or lumen that is connected with tubing for administration of medication or fluids and also used for intermittent infusions. A single lumen catheter is used for blood sampling, venous pressure monitoring and administration of medicines and fluids. Multiple lumen is commonly used to avoid the need for the multiple central venous catheter sites. It has multiple color coded outlets to identify different lumens. The number varies from two [S1] to four. Different ports are used for different purposed such as administration of medications, blood sampling, blood infusions, fluid replacement, and pressure monitoring.

Based on the type of composition, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Polyurethane
  • Polyurethane/Polycarbonate
  • Silicone

Among the type of composition of catheter type, polyurethane dominates the central venous catheters market. When compared with silicone, polyurethane is a new material that is more stiff and strong. Due to strong material, walls are thin and have large lumen diameter maintaining the same outer diameter of the catheter. The coefficient of friction is less in polyurethane and can be used with conventional stainless steel guidewires, while silicone exhibit high coefficient of friction. Silicone soft, biocompatible is being used [S1] for year safely for the vascular system. Silicone catheters tend to reduce mechanical stability. It is usually used in long term devices, though temporary or short term devices are also used. Though polyurethane is more prone to catheter related infection and affected by thrombosis, that might hamper the central venous catheter market.

For the purpose of this study, the global central venous catheters market is geographically categorized into:

  • North America (U.S. & Canada)
  • Europe (U.K., Germany & Rest of Europe)
  • Asia Pacific (China, Japan, and Rest of APAC)
  • Latin America (Brazil, Mexico and Rest of Latin America)
  • Middle East and Africa (UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Rest of Middle East and Africa)

At present, North America dominates the global central venous catheters market followed by Europe. The factors driving the growth of central venous catheters market in North America is rise in incidence of cancer, and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, technological advancement, established healthcare infrastructure and evolved reimbursement policy. European market is governed by rise of geriatric population, technological enhancement and high adoption rate for novel products. Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the next fast growing regional market. Asia, Africa, Central and South America with huge population base is home to almost 60% on new incidence of cancer cases and there is rise in chronic diseases, which act as major factors for the growth of central venous catheters market.
