Overview:

Manganese occurs as a silvery metallic element with an atomic number 25 and a chemical symbol of Mn. Manganese is not a natural element but is found in various minerals such as purpurite, manganite and rhodonite among others. Manganese is very hard metallic element but brittle in nature. Manganese in its pure state is available in four allotropic forms. The alpha form of manganese is stable at ordinary temperatures. The gamma form of manganese converts into alpha form at ordinary temperatures. The remaining forms include flexible, soft and easily cut forms. Manganese is naturally found in mineral ores in Brazil, Russia, South Africa, Australia, India and Gabon. Manganese is present in very high amounts on the ocean floor. About 24% manganese nodules are found on the ocean floor. Manganese is a paramagnetic metal that is exceptionally hard and brittle and resembles iron. Since manganese is highly temperature resistant, it is difficult to fuse, although it is easy to oxidize. Manganese tarnishes slowly in air and oxidizes in water having dissolved oxygen. Manganese occurs in wide number of considerable deposits, out of which the most crucial ores comprise of manganese dioxide in the form of romanechite, pyrolusite and wad. Manganese is indispensable to plant growth and allows the assimilation of nitrates in algae and green plants. Most of the manganese is used in the form of silicomanganese and ferromanganese alloys for the production of steel and iron. Iron oxide based manganese ores are reduced in electric or blast furnaces with carbon to produce ferromanganese which is then used in the manufacture of steel. Manganese is crucial for the production of iron and steel due to its excellent deoxidizing, sulfur fixing and alloying properties.

Rising investments in infrastructural development across the globe is one of the key factors driving the growth of global manganese market. Increasing demand for stainless steel is a major factor contributing to the growth of global manganese market. Further, steel is used on a large scale for many industries such as energy generation, transportation and industrial purposes among others. Hence, developments in these industries are expected to boost demand for steel which in turn is anticipated to boost demand for manganese over the forecast period. Rapid urbanization, speedy automobile production and emergence of new application areas such as electronics are some other major aspects augmenting the global manganese market. In addition, rising focus of several governmental bodies on green energy is projected to bolster the demand for electrolytic manganese metal. Moreover, rising demand for stainless steel especially in the aesthetic construction is anticipated to accelerate the demand for ferromanganese which in turn will drive the global manganese market. Furthermore, rising demand for manganese in battery production coupled with increase in demand for energy storage is anticipated to increase the consumption of manganese based batteries over the foreseeable years. Also, increasing usage of mobile phones as well as electric vehicles is expected to increase the demand for electrolytic manganese dioxide, which in turn will bolster the overall growth of the global manganese market over the forecast period.
