Melamine polyphosphate also abbreviated as MPP is a white crystalline powder with a phosphorous content of around 12-14 % and nitrogen content of around 42-44 %. MPP is widely used as a flame retardant additive in plastics, adhesives coatings and polymers. Melamine polyphosphate interrupt and slows down the combustion process by chemical or physical action in the liquid, solid or gaseous phase. It interferes during decomposition, heating, flame spread or ignition during the course of the fire. Melamine polyphosphate is majorly used in polyurethane foams, nylons and polypropylene intumescent formulations in combination with ammonium polyphosphate. In some explicit formulations, derivatives of isocyanurates, triazines, guanidine, urea and cyanuric acid are used as reactive agents. Melamine polyphosphate is used as a flame retarding agent for upholstered furniture as well as in aircraft and railway seats. It is also use in glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66 and polyamide 6. MPP shows a synergistic effect when applied with metal phosphinates such as aluminum and megnesium hydroxide.
